Gas suppliers accused of profiteering by failing to pass savings to consumers

Energy companies have been accused of failing to pass steep falls in the price of gas to customers.

Wholesale gas prices have dropped by nearly 19 per cent since July but as yet none of the six largest energy suppliers have said they are planning to lower their prices.

Chief executive of Consumer Focus Ed Mayo said: "Prices have been falling since July yet consumers have seen unprecedented rises in their gas and electricity costs. Consumers must now be wondering why they are left waiting."

Maria Wardrobe, spokeswoman for National Energy Action, told the Times that 5.2 million households were living in fuel poverty, with almost a third of people in the north east spending more than ten per cent of their income on fuel.

She said: "The customer always seems to lose out. They [energy companies] must act now as people are really struggling."

However, petrol prices are continuing to fall, with a drop of 6.5p a litre in the last month, according to an AA fuel price report.

Due to supermarket price wars, unleaded petrol has now dropped to under £1 a litre.
